People all around her — 12 of them at last count — have died of COVID-19 complications. But 92-year-old Alice Mayes survived COVID.

So Mayes’ daughter, Onya Rhoades, doesn’t mind too much that she can’t be face-to-face with her mother at Signature HealthCARE nursing home. Rhoades hasn’t been in the same room with Alice in forever, it seems. Signature started limiting visits before the CDC mandated it.

“It is scary when you can’t see her and talk to her — I mean through the window or whatever, but when you rely on somebody else totally to look after her, they become not only then her caregivers but they’re the family at that point,” Rhoades said.
